Why January is one of the best times to look for a job

Timing can be everything when it comes to looking for a job. You need to be actively on the hunt when your ideal job happens to be advertised, and just a few days can mean missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

A great way to maximise your chances of landing that ideal role is by actively searching while companies and recruiters are advertising roles. With that in mind, let’s take a look at why January is one of the best times to look for a job.

For most industries, the beginning of the year is the best time to look for a job. While January will start off slowly as everyone filters back to work after the Christmas break, there’s a great sense of new beginnings and fresh starts.

Everyone in one place

It’s often the case that the New Year means that all of a company’s key decision makers are all in, which can be a rarity throughout the year.

Many companies’ holiday calendars reset from January, so it’s likely that all of the managers and directors will be in the same place at the same time. This means that plans for restructuring or adding new team members might be happening, and hiring decisions will be made more quickly.

Fresh funding

While a skills gap may have become apparent much earlier in the year, businesses can’t always hire as and when the need arises.

January is often when new budgets come into effect and sales figures are updated. The various departments of a company will therefore have greater flexibility to make any necessary additions to their teams, and a better idea of what they need.

Holding out for a bonus

Christmas is a popular time for companies to hand out bonuses to their employees, so many people choose to wait until after they’ve received this bonus to start looking for a new job.

When looking to hire, it therefore makes sense to wait until after the Christmas period to advertise the most important roles, as the talent may be waiting until then to look for a new position.

New year, new attitude

While it’s a bit of an arbitrary marker, it’s clear that there’s a shift in attitude from the end of one year to the beginning of the next.

By the time December comes round, people are getting fed up, heading off on their Christmas breaks, and just feeling generally unmotivated by the cold, dark weather. It’s actually the quietest month of the year for job listings, so it’s worth waiting until the New Year if you’re looking for a new job.

January, on the other hand, is all about new attitudes and new beginnings. People are raring to go, ready to make changes, and keen to tackle new challenges. Getting a new job is a common New Year’s resolution, and it’s a good idea to make use of this natural enthusiasm.
